Counseling Services

What does a school counselor do?

  • A school counselor consults, coordinates, and counsels.

  • A counselor teaches classroom guidance lessons that cover the Gwinnet County Elementary Guidance and Counseling Competencies for each grade level.  Lessons focus on topics such as study skills, listening and following directions, respecting oneself and others, bullying, following rules, expressing feelings appropriately, exploring possible career opportunities, personal safety, and working cooperatively.

  • A counselor works individually with students on an as-needed basis. Students can be referred to a counselor by a teacher, parent, or the student himself.

  • A counselor works with small groups of students on a variety of topics.  Groups may include: family changes, grief and loss, social skills, self esteem, friendship, test-taking skills.

  • A counselor works with parents to help them better understand their child's growth and development
  • When should you call a counselor?

  • When your child is having difficulty learning.

  • When family changes interfere with academic progress

  • When your child needs extra help adjusting to school.

  • When you want to arrange a meeting with several teachers or both a teacher and a counselor.

  • When you need help interpreting test and school records and tracking school progress.
    • When you want to discover available community resources and agencies for your child or your family.

Shantrelle C. Singleton

Professional School Counselor, grew up in Central Florida, graduating from Apopka High School in Apopka, FL in 1991.  She attended Rollins College in Winter Park, FL where she earned a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education in 2001.  She worked as a 3rd grade teacher with the Orange County Public School System for 3 years.  While teaching, Shantrelle pursued a Master’s Degree in School Counseling from the University of Southern Mississippi.  Upon completion of Master’s Degree in 2004, she began her counseling career as a 6th grade counselor at a local middle school in Orlando, FL for 3 years.  Upon moving to Gwinnett County Georgia in July of 2007, Shantrelle accepted a position as a Graduation Coach and 8th grade Counselor at Pinckneyville Middle School.  She remained in this position for 4 years.  She is currently the 3rd - 5th grade counselor at Stripling Elementary School.   
Ms. Singleton is a strong believer in helping children find and pursue their passion in life and in helping them to realize and reach their full potential.  Her favorite quote is, “Children do not care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”
